UPPER SANDUSKY, Ohio - In March, Women’s History Month, Wyandot County Public Health and Period Kits Ohio are teaming up to support those affected by period poverty in Wyandot County.
Around half of the U.S. population menstruates, but two in five people struggle to buy period supplies due to lack of income, according to the Alliance for Period Supplies. Lack of access to period supplies, a necessity, can affect health and hygiene and may lead to missed school, work and other important life events.
The month will kick off with Wyandot County Public Health’s Tea on Period Poverty event at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2025, at the Upper Sandusky Community Library. At this event Geoff Davis, founder of Period Kits Ohio, will share information about period poverty and the aims of Period Kits Ohio. Beca House tea and chai will be served for attendees.
A period supply drive is being held March 1-27 at participating organizations in Upper Sandusky and Carey. Upper Sandusky locations accepting period supply donations include Beca House Coffee, the Upper Sandusky Community Library, Traum Brewing, Creekside Boutique + Creations, Belle Toi’ Salon and Spa and Fort Eighty Eight. Donations are accepted at Carey locations including the Dorcas Carey Public Library and The Coffee Shop.
Supplies needed include tampons, pads and liners. Each period kit contains approximately a one-month supply including 12 tampons, six pads and six liners.
Supplies collected in the month of March will be used to build free period kits to be provided to the public discreetly from Wyandot County Public Health’s harm reduction vending machines in Upper Sandusky and Carey.
The public is invited to join Wyandot County Public Health for a period kit packing event at 5 p.m. March 27 at Traum Brewing. The kits will be built using donated supplies.
Wyandot County Public Health and Period Kits Ohio have partnered so that period supplies are available year-round in the harm reduction vending machines starting this spring.
