Drive Sober: Zero-proof mocktails refreshing treat for designated drivers

The 2024 Zero-Proof Mix Off and Drive Sober Kick Off were held Friday Aug. 9 during the Friday Fun Fest. Participating organizations including Fort Eighty Eight, Upper Sandusky Elks Lodge #83, Bucks Bar and Grill, Wyandot County Family & Children First, and Wyandot County Public Health.

The Zero-Proof Mix Off is held as part of the Wyandot County Safe Communities Coalition's Drive Sober Kick Off. It is an event that celebrates the fun of gathering with the safety of designating a sober driver. The following recipes are shared at the event an after to provide individuals gathering for Labor Day weekend and beyond ideas for drinks to serve to their sober guests.

The 2024 Zero-Proof Mix Off winner was Mark Droll with the Upper Sandusky Elks Lodge #83 with his creation: The Rockin' Poppin' Shirley Temple.

Rockin' Poppin' Shirley Temple 🍒

Ingredients:

  • Glassful of ice cubes
  • Glassful of ice cubes
  • 1 oz. grenadine
  • 4 oz. zero-sugar ginger ale
  • 1 maraschino cherry for garnish
  • One spoonful of red pop rocks

Instructions:

  • Fill a glass with ice.
  • Add grenadine.
  • Top with ginger ale (or sub lemon lime soda).
  • Garnish with a maraschino cherry and a spoonful of pop rocks for some zing/

Bucks Bar & Grill

Sunrise Bubble Punch 🌅

Ingredients:

  • 12 oz Spindrift Blood Orange & Tangerine Sparkling Water
  • 12 oz Ale-8 Ginger Ale
  • 8 oz V8 Splash Berry Blend
  • 8 oz Pineapple Juice
  • 4 oz Dragon Fruit Cosmo Mixer

Instructions:

  • Mix ingredients into a glass with ice and enjoy an uplifting sip.

Fort Eighty Eight

Orange You Glad It's a Mocktail 🍊

Ingredients:

  • .25 oz Orange Juice
  • 1 oz Honey Thyme Simple Syrup
  • 1 oz Lemon Juice
  • 2 oz Unsweet Ice Tea
  • 3 drops Bartender Foam (or 1 oz egg white)

Instructions:

  • Add ingredients and ice to cocktail shaker
  • Shake for 30 seconds to one minute
  • Pour into rocks glass
  • Add ice and garnish with an orange slice

Honey Thyme Simple Syrup 🍯🌿

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup honey
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 sprigs of thyme

Instructions:

  • Add ingredients to a pot and bring to a boil until the honey is dissolved into water. Let cool and store in the fridge for up to one week.

Virginian PinApple 🍍

Ingredients:

  • 6 oz Pineapple Juice
  • 4 oz Mango Juice
  • 2 oz Lime Juice
  • 8 oz Ginger Beer

Instructions:

  • Mix ingredients into a glass with ice and enjoy
  • Note: Lime juice may be fresh squeezed or from concentrate.

Mosquito No-jito 🍃🦟

Ingredients:

  • Glassful of Ice Cubes
  • 1 oz Lime Juice (sweetened or fresh squeezed)
  • Mint Extract to taste (or muddle fresh mint leaves with limes)
  • 4 oz Lemon Lime Soda
  • 1 sliced lime garnish

Instructions:

  • Add a dash of mint extract to taste (A little goes a long way. If using fresh mint leaves, first muddle in the bottom of your glass.)
  • Fill glass with ice
  • Add in prefered lime juice (Note: 1 fresh lime holds about 1 oz of juice).
  • Top with lemon lime soda
  • Garnish with a slice of lime for a citrus-y bite.
